Napa County is in the northern part of the State of California, located north of San Pablo Bay. At the time of the 2010 census Napa County had a population of approximately 136,484 residents. The city of Napa is the county seat. Napa County has a total area of 789 square miles with 40 square miles being water. The Native Americans who inhabited the land in the Napa County area were known as the Patwin meaning “people”. In the mid 1800s the county's population grew as pioneers, prospectors, and entrepreneurs moved in and built homes. The main occupations of the time were raising cattle and farming of grain and fruit crops. The mining of minerals also played a role in the economics during that time. The Spanish appeared in the valley in 1823, in search of a place to build a mission. The first Europeans arrived in the 1830s. In the 1840s, when California was a province of Mexico, huge ranches were constructed. In 1846, conflict between the United States and Mexico resulted in the Bear Flag Revolt which lasted 26 days. California was annexed to the United States and became the 31st state in the Union, and 1850 and Napa County was formed. Over 500,000 nut and fruit trees had been planted in the county by the end of the 1900s. 

Napa County is an area with lavish resorts, beautiful bed-and-breakfasts, and great restaurants featuring top rated chefs, many serving food from local farms. It is not unusual to see colorful hot air balloons floating above the tranquil Napa Valley landscape. Favorite wines produced in the area or Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. Napa County is known worldwide in the wine industry and rivals France with some of the world's top wineries. Napa County is home to a wide variety of plants and animal life including some rare and endangered species. The annual Napa County Fair takes place in July at the Napa County Fairgrounds in Calistoga. The Napa Town & Country Fair takes place in July at the Napa Valley Expo. Arts in April is an event designed to boost tourism during the slow months with hotels, restaurants, and tourist based businesses joining together to celebrate the diverse culture of the area. The Napa Valley Wine Auction takes place in June with wines being donated and auction to the highest bidder, raising millions of dollars for charities in Napa County. The Napa Valley Film Festival supports the art of independent filmmaking specifically through producing the Annual Festival, developing film related events throughout the year, and supporting student filmmaking in local schools.
