Mare Island is part of the City of Vallejo in Northern California. Despite its name, Mare Island is actually a peninsula, not an island. In 1835, a storm capsized a ship carrying the mare of Northern California’s Commandante, General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. When the horse was later found on the shores of Isla de la Plano, the land was renamed to Mare Island. In 1852, the US Government designated Mare Island for the first west coast naval shipyard. At its height during World War II, the shipyard employed 18,500 people. When it was closed in 1996, the shipyard was turned into a museum and other land was developed into master-planned communities and nature preserves.
Mare Island is now a residential community. Most amenities can be found in Vallejo via the Mare Island Causeway. However, there are some pretty interesting things to do on Mare Island. Take a tour of the shipyard at the Mare Island Museum and gorgeous officer’s mansions. Grab a beer at Mare Island Brewing Company’s taproom. Hit the driving range or play a round at the Mare Island Golf Club. The Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve is a stunning green space, spanning 215 acres.
There are 260 new homes that have been built on Mare Island since the shipyard closure. Future communities are being planned. For now, the exclusivity makes Mare Island highly desirable. The median listing price of single family homes in Mare Island is $525,000. Most Mare Island homes are Contemporary or Spanish style and all built within the last twenty years. Homebuyers in search of a quiet, relaxing community, surrounded by natural beauty must consider Mare Island.
