Located in West Contra Costa County, California, the city of Hercules is eight square miles along the shores of the San Pablo Bay. Conveniently located in the East Bay Area, Hercules is 16 miles north of Oakland, 22 miles northeast of San Francisco, and 25 miles south of Napa. “The dynamic city by the bay” was founded in 1879 when the California Powder Works plant needed to find a more rural location for its plant, producing dynamite that they dubbed Hercules Powder. Primarily home to plant employees, the city was incorporated in 1900 by company managers in order to pass laws favorable to the organization. Despite booming business during World War II, the plant eventually closed after moving into the fertilizer industry. The California Powder Company not only gave the city its name, but created a community that still thrives today.
